In France, Spain, Greece, and Turkey, the same pattern is playing out: wildfires breaking out almost simultaneously, fueled by heatwaves and droughts made worse by climate change. Scientists point to the very conditions created by human activities – such as deforestation, monoculture plantations, and inefficient water management – that are exacerbating the problem.
One key factor driving this perfect storm is the abundance of biomass, or combustible vegetation, in European forests. This has built up over decades due in part to climate change, which intensifies rainfall patterns and creates “hydroclimatic whiplash” where ecosystems suddenly swing between wet and dry conditions.
Francesca Di Giuseppe, a fire forecast project coordinator at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, notes that this has created an abundance of biomass that rapidly dries out during heatwaves. The result is fires breaking out almost simultaneously across different countries, all driven by the same broad pattern of heat and drought.
Forest management practices also play a crucial role in the spread of wildfires. Monocultures, dominated by a single species grown for quick timber, are particularly vulnerable to fast-moving fire. This is evident in the devastating blazes that have ravaged parts of France and Spain, where forests planted with pine and eucalyptus – both highly flammable species – have proved disastrous.
The creation of these forests as a result of human decisions, such as Napoleon III’s order to drain and plant marshes in southwestern France with pine in 1857, highlights the long-term consequences of prioritizing short-term economic gains over environmental sustainability.
Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is crucial, but it’s not a silver bullet. Experts agree that reducing risk before fires start is just as important. This starts with tackling climate change and changing forest management practices. Replacing monocultures with mixed forests would improve resilience to droughts, windstorms, insect outbreaks, and fires.
Germany offers an instructive case study for forest management. After World War II, spruce was planted across mountain ranges like the Harz in former East Germany, but these monocultures proved vulnerable to drought and bark beetle infestation. Foresters are now working to convert them into mixed forests to improve resilience.
The lesson here is that wildfire prevention requires a multifaceted approach that takes into account both climate change and forest management practices. Europe’s latest wildfires serve as a stark reminder of the need for more sustainable and resilient forestry practices – before it’s too late.
