Stormy Waters: Hong Kong's Triathlon Tragedy Highlights Weather Woes A 59 year old man, participating in a triathlon at Tai Mei Tuk Water Sports Centre, entered the water during an amber rainstorm warning.
The search for him raises questions about safety protocols in place for such events. The Hong Kong Observatory issued an amber alert at 6:10 am on Sunday, two minutes before the athlete plunged into the water.
While the warning wasn't extreme, it cautioned of squally thunderstorms with frequent lightning that morning. This created treacherous conditions for athletes.
